Austin March 28, 2005. Some of our members have expressed their intention to update information about various items such as change of job, email address, new publications etc or add something which they may have missed in their previous communication to the forum.
We have great pleasure in informing such members and those who would join us in the future that by filling in online participation form they can replace the older information. However, they need to provide all information including those which were provided  earlier. What is amazing of the new arrangement is that as soon as one clicks the submit button, it is automatically uploaded and listed in an alphabetical order in the section, "Member's profile" without any human intervention. One could retrieve important information also immediately about the new participant using search scientist box on the home page.

Thereafter he did his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Applied Molecular Biology from the Institute of Science and Technology, University of Manchester. Currently, he is employed in the  Division of Genetics and Molecular Medicine at the Guy's Hospital King's College London, London. For the past five years he has been working on genes underlying genetic disorders including muscular dystrophy and pulmonary arterial hypertension.  Recently he co-developed a technique for measuring protein-protein interactions in mammalian cells. His work was published in the  recent issue of Nucleic Acids Research [Vol. 33, No. 7, 2005]. The findings  may have application in the area of drug discovery. Earlier this Month, Dr.  Nasim was interviewed by the representative of   Cell-Based Assay News. The latter published the  interview in its 2nd May edition  (pp. 12-14) (http://ww.cba-news.com).  Forum members will be interested to read his interview with "Prothom-Alo".
The second member in the most recent list is Mr. Imtiaz Khan. He did his M.Sc. in
Bioinformatics.  from Northeastern University, Boston, USA. Later he received his post graduate degree in bioinformatics and thereafter successfully completed an internship at Hewlett Packard, USA.   He is at present employed as a Research Fellow in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Unit, Cardiff University, Cardiff, UK. Mr.  Khan has been active in the fields of bioinformatics and computational biology for quite sometime. His current research focuses on encoding time-lapse microscopic images into numbers which invoke novel software development, data structure implementation and algorithm generation.  He has also been involved with the research focused on neighboring nucleotide effect on functionality of SNPs in the human promoter region.  He has developed a number of web based and stand-alone bioinformatics tools.  He has an excellent interdisciplinary team work experience with a strong biomedical science background. The latest paper entitled, "A Simple Web-Based Application for Interaction Analysis of Case-Control Data." of which he is a coauthor has been published in BMC Medical Genetics 2006, 7:34. Part of the month of May saw the enrollment of  Professor Dr. Naiyyum Choudhury, the former Chairman of Bangladesh Atomic  Commission and now heading the Department of Biotechnology at BRAC university; Mr.  A. K. M Abdul Baten, an M.S. in Bioinformatics from the University of Melbourne, Australia and currently doing Ph.D. in the same University, Mr. Md. Altaf Hossain Hossain, an MS in Horticulture from BAU and at present employed as Senior Scientist in the Potato section of Tuber Crops Res. Center, BARI, Joydebpur.

They are  Dr. Abdur Razzaque Shah,  Tissue Culture Specialist and In charge of the Center, Mr. M. Jalaluddin Bhuiyan, Ms Shahana Akter and Ms Maksuda Khatun. The Biotechnologist community of Bangladesh owe to Dr. Abdur Razzaque Shah for his valuable contribution, demonstrated that micro-propagation of vegetable-, horticultural and medicinal plants via tissue culture is feasible commercially. He uses indigenous material and cheap glass wares to cut the cost of operation to the minimum. After meeting local demands of disease-free potato seeds, BRAC is now exporting micro- propagated material of other crops also.

Dr. Hossain did both his M. Sc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Ph.D. in Bioactive Natural Products from Chiba University, Japan. He enjoyed postdoctoral fellowship at two places: National Institute of Health Science, Japan and the University of Mississippi. Until recently he held the position of Associate Research Scientist at the School of Pharmacy, University of Mississippi. Among many outstanding achievements, the one that deserves special mention is that Dr Hossain isolated and characterized  (a) most potent bioactive small molecules, known to date, from aquatic plants that inhibit hypoxia-induced HIF-1 activation through bioassay guided separation; (b) active metabolites from marine organisms that inhibit multi-drug resistance efflux pumps in resistant fungi. In recognition of his outstanding achievements he was awarded the Jack L. Beal Award. One of his papers (see Member's Profile)  was adjudged by the American Society of Pharmacognosy to be the best among those published in Journal of Natural Products during the period between January - June 2005. Along with three of his colleagues, Dr. Hossain has been awarded a patent for inventing an anti-cancer drug; i.e., Saururus cernuus compounds that inhibit cellular responses to hypoxia.
